A Nation Learns, Yet Its Teachers Still Yearn

If teachers shape the future, why are so many of them still fighting for proper recognition?

Every year on May 2nd, Indonesia commemorates Hari Pendidikan Nasional (National Education Day), a moment that echoes far beyond ceremonial speeches. It is a day that reminds us that education is not merely about textbooks and examinations. It is the heartbeat of a nation, steadily shaping its future generation. Inspired by the legacy of Ki Hajar Dewantara, this occasion becomes a reflection of how far education has progressed and how much more can still be achieved.

However, at SMPIT As-Syifa Boarding School, we did not celebrate National Education Day officially with a ceremony or grand events. Even so, the essence of this meaningful day continues to live within our daily activities. For us, education is not defined by a single celebration, but by the continuous process of nurturing knowledge, strengthening discipline, and building noble character.

At our school, students are nurtured not only through academic excellence but also through the cultivation of Islamic values and exemplary character. Teachers provide thoughtful guidance and continuously inspire students to become responsible, respectful, and diligent individuals. Every lesson, meaningful discussion, and school activity contributes to a transformative educational journey that shapes both our character and our future.

Beyond the classroom walls, students also learn the importance of empathy, cooperation, and integrity through daily interactions and communal living in the boarding school environment. The values of respect, sincerity, and lifelong learning are instilled naturally in both academic and non-academic activities. In this way, education becomes a living experience rather than merely a formal obligation.

At the same time, National Education Day also invites society to reflect on the challenges faced by education in Indonesia today. One issue that continues to receive public attention is the welfare of teachers. Despite carrying a significant responsibility in shaping the nation’s future, many teachers in Indonesia still receive relatively low salaries and limited support. This reality has become an important discussion in both educational and political spheres, as improving the quality of education cannot be separated from appreciating and supporting educators themselves. Teachers are not only instructors in the classroom, yet more than it, they are mentors, role models, and pillars of national development whose dedication deserves greater recognition.

Meanwhile, National Education Day also becomes a reflective and somewhat bittersweet moment for many teachers, as some feel that national priorities are shifting more toward programs such as Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) rather than addressing deeper educational concerns and the welfare of educators themselves. Although nutritional programs are undeniably important for students’ well-being and learning readiness, many educators hope that equal attention will also be directed toward improving the quality of education, supporting schools, and ensuring better recognition and welfare for teachers across the country.

Notably, a nation is not remembered by how many ceremonies it held or how many slogans it created, but by how sincerely it valued its teachers and nurtured the minds of its future generation. Classrooms may stand quietly behind concrete walls, yet within them lie the dreams, struggles, and destinies of a nation still being written.

Through the spirit of A.S.Y.I.F.A (Awakening Spirit, Youth, and Intellect through Faith and Achievement), we believe that education becomes more than the transmission of knowledge, it emerges as a lighthouse that illuminates the conscience of a generation. As the classrooms become crucibles of critical thought and character formation, the future of the nation is quietly sculpted through the perseverance of devoted teachers and the aspirations of young minds. Ultimately, the destiny of a civilization is not determined solely by political proclamations or ambitious agendas, whereas by how deeply it values education as the heartbeat of social transformation and the foundation of enduring progress.
